An old acquaintance of Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen, Ted van Broeckhuysen, will introduce ISFJORD-EKSPRESSEN to Svalbard for the first time this summer season og 2019. Ted has been sailing in Spitsbergen waters since 1994, and for 12 years he and Maaike hosted Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen’s “Ship in the ice”.
Ted always had a big interest in ships. Not only sailing them but also in the steelwork and woodwork to rebuild them. In his twenties he renovated two traditional Dutch sailing ships into passenger ships together with his friend and business partner. Privately, Ted has been sailing on yachts on high seas and the idea to have a big oceangoing sailing ships to sail with guests became a new goal.
They found the old hull of a former lightvessel in 1992 and decided to buy it. In 2 years, they rebuild the ship and in 1994 Noorderlicht was ready to sail up north. Spitsbergen was the destination for summer and in the winter they sailed to Canary Islands, Madeira and Azores.
Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen got their eyes on the ship and asked Ted if he was interested to freeze his ship in Tempelfjorden. In the winter season of 2004 Noorderlicht became the adventure hotel “Ship in the ice”. Noorderlicht was sold in 2017 and this gave Ted the possibilities to focus on other projects and challenges. Being captain on Spitsbergen Express is one of them.
