«Every time we passed Adolfbukta, either on a snowmobile or by boat, we cast long glances at Nordenskiöld Lodge and hoped that one day we would have the cabin as a base. Now we are here, in the middle of the mighty wilderness».
In June 2021, Arien Ramnefjell and her fiancé Eli Gunnemark took over the job as hosts and guides at Nordenskiöld Lodge, and with experience, knowledge and Arctic passion, they welcome guests and offer close and powerful experiences.
Arien grew up in the Alps of Sunnøre, at the Norwegian west coast, and nature has always lured her on adventures. During school hours, she cast longing glances at the mountains, and headed straight for the woods when it rang after the last hour.
When Arien came to Svalbard for the first time in February 2012, the mountains were shrouded in changing pastel colours. The air was crisp and crystal clear at every breath. She fell instantly in love.
Arien is an experienced and licensed polar guide, who passionately shares her knowledge of the Arctic. She is just as dedicated if she crosses Spitsbergen on a snowmobile, paddles a kayak in front of glacier fronts, walks over the tundra or glides between the mountains on skis.
«Svalbard has a nature that is constantly changing. Seasons, weather, plants and wildlife. It is without a doubt a landscape that humbles us and demands respect. On the way out in the field there may be glorious sunshine and cloudless skies, and on the way home there may be whiteout and strong winds. The mighty landscape and the challenges it demand are perhaps what stimulates me the most as a guide.
Svalbard is powerful, beautiful and wild. It is real Arctic nature and real experiences», says Arien and concludes:
«When we were asked to be guides and hosts at Nordenskiöld Lodge, it was like a dream come true, and there was no doubt about what the answer was. The cabin must have the best panoramic view on Spitsbergen. Receiving guests and guiding them around the area, with glacier hiking, kayaking and on foot on the various mountain peaks, is the best of all guide jobs.»
