Darkness Exposed

Join us for a snowmobile trip through the dark polar night on Spitsbergen. In the wilderness it’s just you and surrounding mountains. Faint light peeking over the mountains gives you idea of the south, rest of the world is filled with the arctic polar night. This is a half day trip where your drive your own snowmobile from Longyearbyen and out in the Arctic wilderness. On this trip there is also a chance that you will experience the northern lights.

Program

Experience the darkness of the Polar night from a snowmobile, driving through valleys, getting out of town and into the arctic wilderness. The guide meets you at your hotel and we drive to our expedition centre were the guide tells you more about the coming trip, safety rules and give you a lesson in how to drive a snowmobile. You will get all the essential equipment you need to keep you warm and enjoying the day ahead. And off we go. The darkness seams endless and the arctic silence is overpowering. We plan a route based on the conditions. Our goal is to experience the magic of the polar night, the excitement of snowmobile driving, hopefully see some wildlife, and find a nice spot with a view. We stop during the trip and enjoy a hot drink and some biscuit.

Clothing and equipment

Prepare yourself for some wind and an average temperature of around -14°C.

Necessary clothing in the Arctic is woollen thermals as the base layer, warm wool or flees trousers & sweater on the top. Two layers of socks (thin & thick woollen socks), windproof layer on the top. Spacious clothing is recommended because air is the best insulation. Windproof mittens with a warm liner or thick gloves, a warm hat, scarf or flees- tube is also a must have in Svalbard.

Note

Driver’s license for car or motorcycle is required for driving snowmobile. Your driver’s license must be presented before the tour starts. This trip requires minimum two snowmobile drivers without passengers. We may also need to change the number of drivers and passengers in the group. This is in terms of safety reasons.

This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains or pregnant women. This is due to safety for your safety and wellbeing, and Basecamp Explorer can unfortunately not to take responsibility for health problems if this advice is neglected.

In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. This means that we might need to make changes to the planned adventure program. We will always do our outmost to give you a vast experience in the Arctic, and at the same time we must be aware of the destination’s characteristics.
