Darkness Exposed

In the wilderness, it is only you and the wildlife existing in the surrounding landscape. During the darkest season of the year, we often wonder how many polar bears that invisibly passes by, only to leave us with curiosity. Our single proof is the observations of footprints. Embrace the feeling of driving through a picturesque postcard by embarking on a 4-hour snowmobile safari in Longyearbyen surroundings. It is the perfect introduction to snowmobiling and will for sure have you coming back for more.

The guide will meet you at the hotel when the adventure starts. From here on we proceed to Basecamp Expedition Center for information, briefing and distribution of snowmobiles and warm thermal clothes. The guide will inform you about safety, show you how to handle your snowmobile, and introduce you to the route of the day. The route is always depending on weather and snow conditions. The aim of the adventure is to experience the magical polar night, the fun and mastering snowmobile driving, and to search for the best viewing point. We to take pictures along the way and refresh ourselves with warm drinks.

Clothing and equipment

Prepare yourself for some wind and an average temperature of around -14°C.

Necessary clothing in the Arctic is woollen thermals as the base layer, warm wool or flees trousers & sweater on the top. Two layers of socks (thin & thick woollen socks), windproof layer on the top. Spacious clothing is recommended because air is the best insulation. Windproof mittens with a warm liner or thick gloves, a warm hat, scarf or flees- tube is also a must have in Svalbard.

Driver’s license for car or motorcycle is required for driving snowmobile. Your driver’s license must be presented before the tour starts. This trip requires minimum three snowmobile drivers without passengers. We may also need to change the number of drivers and passengers in the group. This is in terms of safety reasons.

This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains or pregnant women. This is due to safety for your safety and wellbeing, and Basecamp Explorer can unfortunately not to take responsibility for health problems if this advice is neglected.

In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. This means that we might need to make changes to the planned adventure program. We will always do our outmost to give you a vast experience in the Arctic, and at the same time we must be aware of the destination’s characteristics.
