High Camp Spitsbergen

Do you dream of skiing down steep mountains and sharp peaks? Cruise big faces or charge down steep couloirs? Perhaps this will be a “first descent”? All this and more, you will experience together with us in the mountains on Oscar II Land in Svalbard.

We travel by boat from Longyearbyen and establish a base camp up on the glacier. From this camp we’ll climb and ski the surrounding peaks. In the Arctic we still have perfect skiing conditions during May. In this period the sun never sets, and thus we let the weather, instead of the clock decide when to go skiing. The temperature seldom drops below 23 F ( -5 C), even high up in the mountains. We spend the nights in warm sleeping bags in our expedition tents.

Evening Before

We will have a briefing at Basecamp Hotel day before at 4 pm. You can talk about the coming days, look at the planned route and check all your equipment. After the meeting, you will have time for a quick trip to the sport stores close by for any last-minute shopping. The dinner is planned on your own, but we recommend our next door neighbour Kroa, which has a nice, relaxed atmosphere and good food.

Day 1

In the morning, our guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive to the harbour and the waiting boat. We load all our equipment on board and head towards Ymerbukta bay. During the crossing of the beautiful fjord, you will have time to take in the first feelings for your coming arctic adventure. This is the arctic and you are heading even deeper into the wilderness! We will arrive to Ymerbukta after lunch. Our goal for the first day is to climb up the Esmark glacier and find a good campsite for the next days. We’ll pitch camp at before dinnertime and enjoy a well-deserved meal. As the sun moves to north, we crawl into our sleeping bags. Or maybe you have enough energy for an evening trip up Polhøgda Mountain?

Lunch & Dinner included

Day 2-4

For the next three days, we will climb up some of the beautiful peaks around the Esmark glacier. We will start our days with a breakfast followed by the first skiing trip. Just pick a mountain you dream for! Depending on the route, lunch can be served on the way or when back at the camp. In the afternoon, we hop on the skis again and head for yet another peak. After a long day in the mountains, it will be nice to relax a bit in camp and have a good dinner. For the tough ones, there is possibility of an evening trip before sleep.

During the 5-day expedition, you will be helping with the practical tasks, such melting snow to water, making food, putting up the tent and digging lavatories. Our guide will decide the routes for each day depending on weather conditions.

Day 5

On our last day, we start early with packing down the camp. It’s time for a last climb. Which peak did you leave to be the last grand decent? A last look at the mountains, before we set course down to the shoreline and wait for the transportation back to Longyearbyen. During the boat trip back to civilization, we’ll have plenty time to say farewell to the mountains of Svalbard and let some of the new impressions fully sink in. Arrival to Longyearbyen during the afternoon or early evening, debrief and after-ski at Basecamp Hotel.

You need to be in good physical shape and experienced in winter camping and steep back-country downhill skiing. It is required that you are used to skiing in shifting snow conditions and that you have knowledge of using climbing skins. You must also have the proper knowledge of basic avalanche safety and be well familiar with avalanche transceivers. Please contact us if more information is needed.
