Winter hike with visit in ice cave

South of Longyearbyen the glaciers are stretching from the towering summits of the nearby mountains and towards Longyear valley. As we hike up in the hilly terrain by the foot of the glacier, you are entering what feels like a moon landscape. Climbing higher towards the glacier you will see a great view of Longyearbyen before entering icy grounds. When walking on a glacier you can only imagine what hides under your feet. We will soon discover the imposing meltwater channels forming the ice caves of Svalbard.
During the hike we will enjoy a warm lunch in the snowy hills surroundings.

Program

Enjoy a solid breakfast before your adventure that starts at 10AM. This day we recommend making a pack lunch to go and the guide will meet you in your hotel reception.

Today’s route is towards the one of the glaciers close to Longyearbyen. Be prepared for å steep climb before the landscape opens as we enter the glacier. The view is amazing and one of the highlights is entering the frozen world underneath our feet.  Everyone will be equipped with head lamps in the polar night, as well as snowshoes or crampons. We will enjoy our lunch outdoors. This is a hike of a lifetime!

Clothing and equipment

Pack your backpack with extra layers of clothes to put on if you get cold. Be prepared for cold temperatures and wind. Bring hand-/ foot warmers, something to give you energy on the way and a bottle of water. We recommend the Nalgene that can handle warm water, because it freezes quickly here in the Arctic.

Wear woollen thermals as the base layer, warm wool or fleece trousers & sweater on the top. Put on two layers of socks (thin & thick woollen socks) and a windproof layer on top the warm layers. Spacious clothing is recommended since air is the best insulation. Wear warm and windproof mittens, a warm hat (wind proof) and scarf or fleece- tube. On cold days it is nice to have a mask or a buff where you can hide your face in the cold wind.

You will also need steady and warm hiking shoes or winter boots.
