Winter hike with visit in ice cave

This is a hike for the adventurous souls! The darkness of the polar night sweeps over the valleys, while the northern lights, the snow, the moon and the stars illuminate the landscape more than you can imagine. Join us on a hiking experience out of the ordinary.

Program

Enjoy a solid breakfast before your adventure that starts at 10AM. This day we recommend making a pack lunch to go and the guide will meet you in your hotel reception.

Today’s route is towards Larsglacier by Longyearbyen. Be prepared for å steep climb before the landscape opens as we enter the glacier. The view is amazing and one of the highlights is entering the frozen world underneath our feet.  Everyone will be equipped with head lamps in the polar night, as well as snowshoes or crampons. Look forward to a hike of a lifetime!

Clothing and equipment

Pack your backpack with extra layers of clothes to put on if you get cold. Be prepared for cold temperatures and wind. Bring hand-/ foot warmers, something to give you energy on the way and a bottle of water. We recommend the Nalgene that can handle warm water, because it freezes quickly here in the Arctic.

Wear woollen thermals as the base layer, warm wool or flees trousers & sweater on the top. Put on two layers of socks (thin & thick woollen socks) and a windproof layer on top the warm layers. Spacious clothing is recommended since air is the best insulation. Wear warm and windproof mittens, a warm hat (wind proof) and scarf or flees- tube. On cold days it is nice to have a mask or a buff where you can hide your face in the cold wind.

Note

This trip is suitable for everybody with good physical condition.

In Spitsbergen, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms or thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the planned route, and this might lead up us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware that characteristics of the destination.

Combine your stay with accommodation at the unique trapper style hotel in Longyearbyen:
