Half day RIB boat safari

Join us on an open RIB boat fjord safari through the bright spring in Spitsbergen. In the wilderness it’s just you and surrounding mountains. Summer light revealing the treasures of the mountains and Arctic ocean. This is a half day excursions will take you to the birdcliffs by Bjørndalen and to historical Grumant.

The day starts at 10AM, when your guide picks you up from the hotel. We will quickly go through todays program, destinations and activities. Once the survival suit has been put on and zipped shut, we will head down to the harbour.

We travel across Isfjorden with open RIB boats and make our first stop on the fjord outside of Grumant. Your guide will share the stories about the old, abandoned Russian mining town. On the safari we are looking to see arctic birds, walruses, seals, belugas or bigger whales, or even the polar bear.

Clothing and equipment

Despite Spitsbergen’s northern location, the archipelago has a relatively mild climate compared to other areas on the same latitude. In summer, the average temperature in Longyearbyen is approximately 5 ° C. There is normally very little rain, although it is not unusual that there is fog and low clouds. Even if there is little rain, the ground is often wet due to the melting snow. Cold wind is usual even during the summer season. The weather on Svalbard changes quickly, and local variations can be huge – so it is better to have little bit too much clothes with you.

Open RIB boat safari is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains. Pregnant women cannot participate on any snowmobile, dog sledding or boat safaris arranged by Basecamp Spitsbergen. Basecamp takes no responsibility to any health issues, due to neglecting this advice.

In Spitsbergen, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms or thick fog. This means we might need to make changes to the planned route, and this might lead up us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware that characteristics of the destination.
