Arctic Spirit

Take a moment to soak up the exquisite arctic scenery. This day we set out to explore the heavily crevassed Nordenkiöld glacier. Exploring by hiking up and down the glacier, staring down cracks and enjoying the shiny glacier surface. It feels like walking on a different planet!

Program

The day starts early at 8AM when your guide picks you up from the hotel. We will quickly go through todays program and once the survival suit has been put on and zipped shut, we head down to the harbour. On this journey we travel across Isfjorden to Billefjorden. Enjoy the views and its wildlife on our way to the glacier destination. Keep your eyes open for birds, walruses, seals, whales, belugas or even the polar bear.

After arriving to shore in Adolfbukta, expedition lunch is served outside Nordenskiold Lodge with a great view to the glacier. This is also where we get familiar with our glacier gear and how to act when glacier hiking. It is a new experience when feeling the frozen ground under your steps. We walk up and down, explore the art of nature, take photos and if time allows, we might even put on a rope to see further down in a crevasse.

When returning to the lodge we leave our gear, enjoy a warm outdoor dinner before heading back to town. The crossing takes around three hours each way.

Clothing and equipment

Prepare yourself for some wind and an average summer temperature of around 5°C.

Even if we do have warmer days in Svalbard, it is always better to have warm clothes. A proper local always wear wool thermals closest to the body in one or two layers. In summertime a thick sweater or fleece jacket might be enough as a mid-layer, but make sure you top it all up with a wind- and waterproof layer on top. If you tend to get cold it is smart to bring along a light down or primaloft weather as well. At last steady shoes that can get dirty, woollen socks, gloves, buff, hat and sunglasses.

In Svalbard each participant is responsible to dress properly for the adventure. This is for your wellbeing and safety when it comes to hypothermia, frostbite and or other injuries that can occur due to lack of clothing or shoes. Kindly as us for advice if you are in doubt.

Note

This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains or pregnant women. This is due to safety for your safety and wellbeing, and Basecamp Explorer can unfortunately not to take responsibility for health problems if this advice is neglected.

In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. This means that we might need to make changes to the planned adventure program. We will always do our outmost to give you a vast experience in the Arctic, and at the same time we must be aware of the destination’s characteristics.
