Embark on a journey to the High Arctic, and drive through the barren and beautiful landscape unique to Svalbard – the land of the cold shores. Snow-clad mountains are illuminated with blue lights as the sun is slowly returning to the frozen Arctic in mid-February. The snowmobiles will glide across glaciers, mountains and frozen fjords, before arriving at the isolated Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel. Enjoy spectacular local food and a bit of storytelling in beautiful surroundings, go for an Arctic swim and visit the Russian mining society of Barentsburg.

Day 1

At arrival in in Longyearbyen, your devoted Basecamp guide will greet you at the airport and transport you to Basecamp Hotel. This is the basecamp for your expedition in Spitsbergen, decorated in authentic trapper’s style down to the very last detail. You can choose to spend the afternoon on your own wandering around the world’s northernmost town or we can arrange for a kick-off meeting in our meeting room.. Maybe you want to try dogsledding and a dinner in Trapper’s style?

Day 2

At 10:00 am our guide will meet you in the reception at Basecamp hotel. There will be enought time for a quick briefing, and to make sure you have brought all the necessary clothing and personal items you will need at Isfjord Radio. We will provide you With a warm snowmobile suit, shoes, a helmet, goggles and a pair of gloves once at Our expedition base in Longyearbyen. After a quick snowmobile lesson and in introduction to basic safety rules, we are ready to venture into the Arctic wilderness. We will drive across glaciers, past snow covered mountains and frozen fjords. There will be plenty of time to admire the magical scenery in blue and white. We make several stops along the way, including a visit to the Russian settlement in Barentsburg. This will be a rare opportunity to observe what will seem like a small piece of Societ in the middle of the High Arctic. We take a walk around the town before sitting down for a Russian style lunch. Our hosts at Isfjord Radio will be ready to give you a warm welcome upon arrival, including a much-needed hot drink. There will be enough time to put together a kick-off meeting in the conference room before a delicious 3-course meal will be served. What a way to finish the adventurous day!

Day 3

After a substantial breakfast, we have time for another meeting. Our conference room has a magnificent view of the Arctic Ocean. After lunch, we pack our things and get back on the snowmobiles and head into the Arctic nature. We will take a direct route to Longyearbyen and arrive back at Basecamp Hotel in the afternoon. There are several great restaurants around Longyearbyen, from fine-dining to casual trapper’s style restaurants. The choice is yours!

Day 4

Breakfast is served at Basecamp Hotel from 7am. After breakfast, we can arrange for a meeting room for a debrief. Or if you are looking for more casual morning, we recommend a walk around Longyearbyen or a visit to Svalbard Museum. After lunch, it’s time to pack your suitcase and leave the Arctic for now.

Flights, airport shuttle, single room supplement at Isfjord Radio, accommodation in Longyearbyen, snowmobile insurance of NOK 175 pr. scooter pr. day, CO2 investment of NOK 250 per person.

Recommended equipment

Recommended clothing in the Arctic: Woolen underwear as base layer, warm wool or fleece trousers and a warm sweater, two layers of socks (thin & thick woolen socks), a windproof layer on top (spacious clothing is recommended since air offers the best insulation), gloves, a warm hat (wind proof), scarf or fleece tube.

Travel necessities: Indoor shoes or extra woolen socks, indoor leisure wear/casual clothing for dinner, toilet articles, sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars, camera, small bag/ backpack for personal equipment during the trip, the rest of your belongings you can leave at Basecamp Hotel.

Note

Driver’s license for car or motorcycle is required for driving snowmobile. Your driver’s license must be presented before the tour starts.

This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains. Pregnant women cannot participate on any snowmobile safaris arranged by Basecamp Spitsbergen. Basecamp Explorer takes no responsibility to any health issues, due to neglecting this advice.

In Spitsbergen, weather conditions can change quickly. We can encounter strong winds, snowstorms, thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the original route, which might involve alternative destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different method of transportation or accommodation than what was described in the program.
