4 days summer adventure to Isfjord Radio in Spitsbergen

Combine work with unforgettable adventures! We would like to welcome you to Longyearbyen, the northern most town in Europe! And from the edge of the inhabitable world you will continue even further into the wilderness! There are no roads beyond Longyearbyen, so we will use our open boats to cross over the icy fjord to our Adventure Hotel Isfjord Radio. Here, you really are on the border of civilization –half way to Greenland. Outside the northern most city, it’s only the vast wilderness and arctic silence waiting for you. Isfjord Radio offers you modern hotel in a rough arctic landscape surrounded with arctic silence topped with astonishing food and good meeting facilities. What else can you ask?

Day 1

Upon arrival in in Longyearbyen, your devoted Basecamp guide will greet you at the airport and transport you to Basecamp Hotel. This will be the basecamp for your expedition in Spitsbergen, decorated in authentic trapper’s style down to the very last detail. You can choose to spend the afternoon on your own wandering around the world’s northernmost town or we can arrange for a kick-off meeting in our meeting room. Maybe you want to try dogsledding and a dinner in Trapper’s style?

Day 2

After a good night’s sleep in our unique trapper’s style room, we are ready to venture into the Arctic wilderness of Spitsbergen. Our guide will meet you in the reception after breakfast. There will be time for a quick briefing, and to make sure you have brought all the necessary clothing and personal items you will need at Isfjord Radio. We will provide you with a survival suit, shoes, gloves, hat and goggles once at our expedition base in Longyearbyen. We drive down to the harbor and get settled in open RIB-boats. Get ready for some fresh sea air, sea spray and close encounters with the Arctic wildlife of Svalbard. The fjords are teeming With Arctic birds, walruses and belugas this time of year. Our hosts at Isfjord Radio will be ready to give you a warm welcome upon arrival, including a much-needed hot drink. We enjoy a 2-course lunch, before we get settled in our ocean view conference room. Before dinner we get to explore the beautiful Kapp Linné, and learn more about the former radio station. We recommend an Arctic swim, before visiting our modern sauna.. It’s the perfect way to wrap up an adventurous day!

Day 3

A new and adventurous day awaits us. After a good night sleep and a solid breakfast, the meeting room is ready. Depending on the length of the meeting, you might have time for a stroll along the beautiful coastline. The guide will tell you more about the history of the surrounding area and of the challenging life as a trapper on Svalbard. After finishing a 2-course lunch, we get back into our survival suites and head back to Longyearbyen. We will arrive in Longyearbyen during the afternoon, and check back into Basecamp Hotel. There are many excellent restaurants in Longyearbyen, and we will be happy to book you a table depending on your preferences.

Day 4

Traditional Norwegian breakfast is served at Basecamp Hotel from 7am. After breakfast, we can facilitate a final meeting in our meeting room. If you are more intersted in having a look around Longyearbyen, we recommend a visit to Svalbard Museum. After lunch, it’s time to pack your suitcase and say goodbye to Spitsbergen for now.

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED?

Flights, airport shuttle, drinks with meals, single room at Isfjord Radio, accommodation in Longyearbyen, CO2 investment of NOK 250 per person.

As part of Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen’s efforts to be climate neutral, there will be an additional climate investment charge of NOK 250 per guest.  This is donated in its entirety to Basecamp Foundation’s forestry project in Masai Mara, Kenya. Recommended equipment

Recommended clothing in the Arctic: Woolen underwear as the base layer, warm wool or flees trousers & sweater on the top, two layers of socks (thin & thick woolen socks), windproof layer on the top (spacious clothing is recommended since air is the best insulation),  gloves, warm hat (wind proof), scarf or flees- tube.

Good to have with you: Indoor shoes or extra woolen socks, indoor leisure wear/ casual clothing for dinner, toilet articles, sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars, camera, small bag/ backpack for personal equipment during the  trip, rest of your belongings you can leave to Basecamp Hotel.

Note

This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pain. Pregnant women cannot participate on any snowmobile, dog sledding or boat safaris arranged by Basecamp Spitsbergen. Basecamp takes no responsibility to any health issues that should arise as a result of neglecting this advice.

In Spitsbergen, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms, thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the original route, which might lead to alternative destinations. It can also mean that we need to use a different method of transportation or accommodation than what was described in the program.
