Clothing and equipment

Prepare yourself for some wind and an average summer temperature of around 5°C and do remember your swim suite for your Arctic spa!

Even if we do have warmer days in Svalbard, it is always better to have warm clothes. A proper local always wear wool thermals closest to the body in one or two layers. In summertime a thick sweater or fleece jacket might be enough as a mid-layer, but make sure you top it all up with a wind- and waterproof layer on top. If you tend to get cold it is smart to bring along a light down or primaloft jacket as well. At last, steady shoes that can get dirty, woollen socks, gloves, buff, hat and sunglasses. You can never get enough warm clothes for the boat trip if the wind is swiping over the Arctic land.

Good to have with you: Indoor shoes or extra woolen socks, indoor leisure wear/ casual clothing for dinner, toilet articles, sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars, camera, backpack for personal equipment during the  trip, rest of your belongings you can leave to Basecamp Hotel.

This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains. Pregnant women cannot participate on any snowmobile safaris arranged by Basecamp Spitsbergen. Basecamp takes no responsibility to any health issues, due to neglecting this advice.

Isfjord Radio is a wilderness hotel and to move outside you need a guide with rifle for polar bear protection.

In Spitsbergen, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms, thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the planed route, and this might lead up us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program.
