ISFJORD RADIO ADVENTURE HOTEL

Join us for one night in beautiful Isfjord Radio at Cape Linnè. Our remote Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel is situated by the mouth of Isfjorden, one of Svalbard’s biggest fjords. Here, you really are on the border of civilization –half way to Greenland.

Day 1

The day starts early at 8AM when your guide meets you at your hotel in Longyearbyen. We drive straight to the harbour and embark on your vessel for the day, ISFJORD-EKSPRESSEN.

We head out in Isfjorden and make our first stop by the bird cliff outside Bjørndalen and Grumant, an historical abandoned Russian mining town. The wildlife in the fjord is rich during summer and we are on the lookout for arctic birds, walruses, seals, belugas or bigger whales, or even the polar bear.

The journey continues to Barentsburg, an operative Russian mining town with around 400 inhabitants, including the one and only cat in Svalbard. 270 steps will lead you from the harbour to the main street of this distinct town created with colourful houses in a naked landscape. You have around one hour to explore the town on your own before heading even longer west, to Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel.

At Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel the hosts will greet us as we arrive, and a warm 2-course lunch awaits. arrival. In the afternoon we invite you further into the wilderness by joining the hike Walk of the day at 3-5PM (every Monday-Friday). Upon return the sauna will be heated, and with an Arctic spa you are in for a real gem of the Isfjord Radio experience before dinner is served at 8PM.

MORE THAN TRAVEL

As part of Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen’s efforts to be climate neutral, we add an additional CO2 and enviromental investment of NOK 250 per guest.  This is donated in its entirety to do good projects contributing to a sustainable future in our destinations.

Clothing and equipment

Prepare yourself for some wind and an average summer temperature of around 5°C and do remember your swim suite for your Arctic spa!

Even if we do have warmer days in Svalbard, it is always better to have warm clothes. A proper local always wear wool thermals closest to the body in one or two layers. In summertime a thick sweater or fleece jacket might be enough as a mid-layer, but make sure you top it all up with a wind- and waterproof layer on top. If you tend to get cold it is smart to bring along a light down or primaloft jacket as well. At last, steady shoes that can get dirty, woollen socks, gloves, buff, hat and sunglasses.

Note

Isfjord Radio is a wilderness hotel and to move outside you need a guide with rifle for polar bear protection.

In Spitsbergen, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms or thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the planned route, and this might lead up us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware that characteristics of the destination.
