Marking World Tourism Day 2022
World Tourism Day (WTD) is commemorated each year on 27 September to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The day was designated by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in September 1979. This year, WTD was celebrated under the theme Rethinking Tourism. The theme’s main goal was to inspire the debate about rethinking tourism for development, including through education and jobs, as well as tourism’s impact on the planet and opportunities to grow more sustainably.
As we marked this year’s World Tourism Day, Basecamp Explorer Kenya in collaboration with Ecotourism Kenya, Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association, and Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies held a discussion on Rethinking Tourism. The panelists included our CEO Jeremiah Mutisya, who engaged participants in discussing how we can leverage the power of destination stewardship by centering communities in tourism planning, policy, and implementation. This event presented a unique chance to discuss our perspective on tourism and hospitality practice and encourage synergy towards a more sustainable future.
