Enjoolata Center Wins the Cultural Category.
Basecamp Explorer Kenya in collaboration with Bull Arkitekter proudly won the Architectural Association of Kenya Award of Excellence of 2022 under the category Best in Culture for the Enjoolata Centre in Masai Mara. The design was recognized for its good representation of the local livelihoods, traditions, history and cultural heritage of the Maasai Community.
Located at Basecamp Masai Mara, the Enjoolata is an innovative center creating awareness, for the local population and visitors, around global climate balance and the consequences of not taking our responsibility seriously around the preservation of Masai Mara and its wildlife.
The architectural design of the center was based on a modern interpretation of a small village fenced off and protected from wildlife. Enjoolata includes two large exhibition rooms, showcasing the wildlife of the Mara, history of the Maasai, climate challenges and solutions initiated by Basecamp Explorer. It also houses the Basecamp Masai Brand (BMB) workshop, a video editing room for guests, a planned community radio station implemented by Masai Mara Wildlife Association (MMWCA), a telecommunication room, movie square, professors lounge and a library, all of which connect to an open courtyard for events and films. All these in-built facilities tell the story of the iconic wildlife of Masai Mara, as well as the history of the Masai culture that has lived side by side with wildlife for generations.
Since its opening in 2018, the centre has been serving as an education facility that showcases, protects & enhances Maasai culture, the natural environment, the wildlife as well as a research centre to further study some of the threatened natural species in Masai Mara. While at Enjoolata, visitors from all over the country and the world experience the unique and fascinating Maasai culture from ancient rituals, attire, beliefs, as well as their peaceful co-existence with the wildlife who have roamed the Masai Mara plains for generations. The centre also serves as a community gathering place and a repository for all things Maasai focus from which the Maasai can share their unique culture with the world.
We are grateful to our partners for their continued support and acknowledge that we are on the right path of shaping the future of awareness and education for the community in the Mara and beyond. Together, we can conserve this pristine region for generations to come. Read more about Enjoolata Centre
