Experience the Great Migration

Visiting Masai Mara during migration season is the ultimate way of experiencing the last multi-species migration on the planet. From mid-June to December more than a million wildebeest, zebras and antelopes scatter the vast plains of the Mara, making this natural wonder even more wondrous.

Day 1

Upon arriving at Olkiombo Airstrip our friendly and knowledgeable Maasai guide will be waiting to transfer you to the camp. Arrive at Basecamp Masai Mara in time to settle into your room and enjoy some lunch before an afternoon safari activity. During your afternoon game drive, you will witness how the constant battle for survival makes the migration season a particularly exhilarating time to visit Masai Mara. As the sun sets you will return to camp for dinner. Listen to your Maasai guide tell stories about their culture with the grazing wildebeest herds just across the river.

Day 2

Enjoy morning and afternoon safari activities from Basecamp Masai Mara. Game drives are the best way to see the big wildlife including the famous big cats of the Masai Mara. For the big cats – the lions, the cheetah and the leopards, the migration season is a time of abundance. The vast amount of available prey allows the cats to grow strong, and produce healthy offspring. Return to camp for dinner, followed by story sharing and stargazing around the fireplace.

Day 3

Another day on safari at Masai Mara. Following a hearty breakfast, our naturalist Maasai guide will take you on a camp walk to show you some of the operational elements that have made Basecamp one of the leading pioneers in the responsible tourism industry. Take a tour to learn how Basecamp supports the local Maasai community by visiting Basecamp Maasai Brand a Fairtrade-certified handicraft business that enables Maasai women to apply their beading skills to produce and sell their handcrafted products, providing them with a reliable source of income.

Rise early for a morning game drive in Masai Mara Reserve. Enjoy driving across the vast Mara Plains and keep your eyes open, for anything is possible! After breakfast, spend your time relaxing in camp watching the wildlife right in front of your tent. The camp has a lot of eco-initiatives which you may wish to learn about during your stay. Learn about Basecamp’s reforestation project that is intended to re-wild the Mara. We encourage our guests to contribute to offsetting their carbon footprint by planting a tree at a minimal fee. Later head to Eagle View for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5

Eagle View is situated inside Naboisho Conservancy. Inside Naboisho the number of vehicles permitted is strictly limited. This has the double advantage of attracting a wide array of species as well as creating a more exclusive viewing experience for tourists. Within the conservancy, you will encounter the northern migration of wildebeest, the not-so-distant relative of the wildebeest migrating from the Serengeti that you meet in the National Reserve. As you drive, enjoy the varied landscape of Naboisho, presently offering the highest density of lions on the planet.

During your walk, your guide will show you the finer details of the savannah, including wildlife footprints and dung. Your walk ends at Wilderness Camp. Wilderness Camp is our tribute to safari as it was meant to be. Tucked away deep inside the incomparable Saddle Valley, it is just you, the Maasai, the wildlife, and the stars – absolutely no unnecessary distractions.

As you drive back, your guide will equip the car with infrared lights to allow you to spot the nocturnal animals of Naboisho.
