SPECTACULAR WILDLIFE AND BEACH SAFARI

Specially designed for families with children, this safari takes you on a magical African safari, introducing young children to the wonders of the bush before unwinding along the calm turquoise shores of the Indian Ocean. On this fantastic family safari holiday, join us in the famous Masai Mara plains and witness some of the best wildlife in the world. Later, spend a few days in Lamu, Kenya’s unique coastal cultural town.

Day 1

Your family safari adventure begins at Wilson Airport in Nairobi. You will catch a flight to Masai Mara from Wilson Airport landing at Olkiombo Airstrip at about 11h00. Upon your arrival, you will be met by our skilled Maasai guide ready to take you through your first game drive en route to our camp. Arrive at camp in time for lunch. Whilst the parents are settling in their rooms the children will meet up with the Maasai guide and get acquainted with our Young Explorers Club. For a start, the children will be engaged in colouring, animal puzzles and board games all with a safari theme. During your afternoon game drive, your child will receive a wildlife workbook in which one can record the wildlife they spot on the game drive. Return to camp for dinner followed by a stargazing experience, and hear some African bush legends around the fireplace.

Day 2

Spend your morning exploring the park to see Mara’s magnificent wildlife up-close. After breakfast, the young explorers meet up with their Masai guide for a bird walk safari. It is an opportunity for them to learn about some of the over 300 species of birds that call this place home. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon while the children have time for an arts and crafts session. They have time to draw, colour and learn how to decorate one’s face in various patterns and shapes. On your afternoon game drive, your Maasai guide will drive you to a scenic point to enjoy a sundowner. Enjoy dinner, followed by story sharing and stargazing around the fireplace.

Day 3

Today after your morning game drive, the children will head out to the tree plantation to identify plants and learn about the benefit of trees to the local Maasai community. Each child will have time to help in transplanting tree seedlings that will be used to re-wild the Mara. Alternatively (At a small fee) they can also plant their own trees just like the Obama Family. After lunch, visit the Basecamp Maasai Brand (BMB) where the children will have an opportunity to create their own unique items such as bracelets. They will learn the importance of bead making to the Maasai community and can take their crafted items home as souvenirs. Enjoy dinner followed by a live tribal dance and song performance from the Maasai warriors. This is an excellent opportunity to engage in song and dance with the local Maasai community.

Day 4

Awake at dawn for an early morning game drive complete with a picnic breakfast. Watch out for the enormous herds of grazing wildlife, plus their predators. Back at camp, the children will spend the morning with a Maasai naturalist learning different bush survival skills like how to make a bow and arrow or how to make a toothbrush from a tree. You will be transferred later in the afternoon to Eagle View in Mara Naboisho with a game drive en-route. Enjoy the exceptional wildlife in Mara Naboisho from a pride of lions, elephants, to wildebeests as well as zebras. End your day watching the sunset over the Mara plains, with a Basecamp sundowner. After dinner, rest by the fireplace as you enjoy the sights and sounds of Africa.

Day 5

Parents with children over 12 years head out for an early morning walking safari. The younger children join their guide for a walk around the camp where they learn how the Maasai track various wildlife by identifying their footprints and dung droppings. After breakfast, relax in your well-appointed tented camp for some time before having lunch. Join your guide for an afternoon game drive. Round off your afternoon game drive with a Basecamp sunset sundowner. Drive back to Eagle View with a night game drive en-route. A Night Safari is an exhilarating experience, only to be enjoyed inside private conservancies like Naboisho.

Day 6

Spend your last day in Masai Mara at leisure waking up to a late breakfast or join your Maasai guide for a last morning game drive. Now that this safari has come to an end, say your goodbyes. Arrive at the airstrip in time for your flight to Nairobi where you will board a connecting flight to Lamu. In Lamu, you will be met at the airport and transferred via boat ride to your Lamu hotel. After checking in, head out to enjoy a sunset walk along the beach to familiarize yourself with the area. Return to the resort in time for dinner and entertainment.

Day 7

Spend your day exploring the narrow and winding streets or stroll along the waterfront, exploring Lamu Old Town (a World Heritage Site). Most important attractions are the fishing and vegetable markets, Lamu Old Town, Lamu Fort and Lamu Museum (at an extra cost inquire during reservation). On this tour, you will learn about the rich history of the town. Donkeys are the major mode of transport within Lamu. Enjoy a donkey ride around the town center where you can buy your souvenirs. Better still you can sunbathe on the pristine beaches, or enjoy the available water sports, like scuba diving and snorkeling.

Day 8

Today you will be transferred by boat (30 min) to Manda Island (at an extra cost inquire during reservation). This is an unspoiled, and idyllic island of the Lamu archipelago. Visit the Takwa Ruins and the Great Mosque at Takwa situated on the south side of Manda Island founded around the year 1500 and abandoned around 1700. Enjoy the rest of the time swimming and exploring the Manda beach. As you head back to your hotel experience the soothing sail of an evening sunset cruise. The sunset cruise is totally tranquil and romantic.

Day 9

Wake up to a leisurely breakfast. Spend the rest of the morning at leisure, you can head down to the beach for a swim or stroll along the beach one last time. Return to the hotel where you will gather your bags. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Nairobi to catch your onward flight.
