8 Days Migration Safari in Masai Mara and Mara Naboisho Conservancy

Experience one of the 7 Wonders of the World! The migration is an amazing and an unforgettable experience for every traveler but you could choose to add a standard safari to the viewing of the Great Migration. This itinerary combines the unfolding drama of the wildebeest migration on the majestic plains of the Masai Mara with various safari activities such as night game drives in the Naboisho Conservancy, cultural encounters with the Maasai’s and visiting some of the community projects supported by Basecamp. This is a perfect safari for a guest who wants to experience the beauty and drama of the migration in elegance and style.

Day 1

Your migration safari starts with a touch down at Ol Seki Airstrip where you will be met by our Masai guide for a transfer to Eagle View in Mara Naboisho. Mara Naboisho is a community-owned nature conservancy bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve leased from more than 500 Maasai families. Enjoy a short game drive en route. During the migration period, the seemingly endless plains, are dotted with wildebeests, zebras among other wildlife.

Arrive at Eagle in time for lunch. The innovative architecture of Eagle View allows you to gaze across the vastness of the African savannah since it’s perched atop a natural hilltop. You will have some time to settle into your tented room before joining your guide on a late evening game drive for an exciting game viewing adventure. After the game drive, head back to camp for dinner and some storytelling by the fireplace before falling asleep to the sounds of the African night.

Visit our community project – Koiyaki Guiding School where young Maasai learn about conservation and wildlife guiding skills. A short lunch follows, and then you will be back out in the safari vehicles to seek out wildlife and explore the rich landscapes of the Naboisho Conservancy. Wind up your evening with a sundowner before heading back to Camp for your overnight stay.

Day 3

Spend a full day exploring the Masai Mara and you’ll soon realize why this reserve is so highly regarded as the best reserve in Africa. Every year, the Masai Mara and Serengeti play host to one of the great wildlife spectacles in the world: the Great African Wildebeest Migration. During this time, millions of wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle pound their way across savannas in an instinctual survival of the fittest. Another big draw card to the Masai Mara is its dense population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard, which sometimes requires a trained eye to spot.

Your guide will divide your safari time between watching out for the migration and looking for predator interactions, which should be plentiful at this time of year. Your picnic lunch is served under the shade of an Acacia tree as you take a break from scanning the horizons. Return to camp just after dark. Dinner and drinks will be served upon your return at Wilderness camp.

Day 4

You can enjoy morning and afternoon game drives from the camp as well as short walking safaris, a night game drive and sundowner out in the bush. Wilderness camp is our nostalgic tribute to the safaris of the early explorers and safari pioneers. Free from artificial luxury and modern disturbances, at Wilderness you experience safari as it was meant to be. Since the camp is situated in a private conservancy, the number of camps and vehicles here are strictly limited giving you by far the best safari experience away from the busier areas of the Masai Mara Park.

Day 5

From Wilderness camp, you will be transferred to Leopard Hill our newest camp situated in a unique location in the heart of Mara Naboisho Conservancy. Leopard Hill gives you an opportunity to experience the magic of the savannah while enjoying the modern luxury of the camp.

Afterward, relax and enjoy some downtime while reading a book or enjoying the exciting sightings straight from the camp, so make use of the binoculars provided. Join your guide for a late evening game drive. As darkness sets in, it is your opportunity to see what happens in the African bush at night. Your Maasai Guide will equip the vehicle with infrared lights to allow you to spot the nocturnal animals of Naboisho. At the camp, dinner will be served at your choice of venue before falling asleep under the African sky.

The Masai Mara has some of the best game views with everything from the “Big Five” to dramatic river crossings, this is the quintessential migration safari. It’s hard to decide which is more spectacular, the vast herds of wildlife or the incredible “Out of Africa” scenery.  Once you get back to camp, dinner will be served at the restaurant then later you can share your stories and photos of the day with the team and other guests by the fireplace or head back to your tent for some drinks around your private camp fireplace.
