Travel tips and equipment

Practical tips
Some practical travel tips concerning flights, airticket prices, lodging, meals, activities and sights, including tips as to when one should travel.

Clothing and equipment for winter visits
The average temperature in Longyearbyen varies from -14°C in winter to +6°C in summer. During winter it is not uncommon that the temperature is between -20 and -30 degrees in longer periods. Combined with wind, the effective temperature may get close to -70°C. Several layers of wool are needed, as well as wind proof outer clothing, and, of course, no bare skin.

Clothing and equipment for summer visits
Svalbard is an arctic area where also the summer can be relatively harsh. Short pants are a seldom sight while it is almost always necessary to have wind proof clothing available. We can have fantastic fair weather, but you should also have a hat and gloves at hand. The need for equipment varies with the kind of activities you wish to engage in.

Private group

Some will find qualities in driving in smaller groups due to the experience and also spending time together, when for some of us meeting up with new people is a part of the adventure. Going with Basecamp Spitsbergen you will have the option to explore the nature in privacy.
