Background:
Chandelao village is a heritage village situated in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan. The village consists of approximately 2000 inhabitants mainly hindu people. The main challenge of this rural semi desert area is lack of water. The mean annual rainfall being about 330 mm, and most of it falls within a few days, only allows one crop in a year even though the soil fertile enough to grow two crops. The main occupation of the villagers is farming and animal husbandry. Irrigation is rare. Few people have water collection in their homes, relying on fetching drinking water by the village lake or from the traditional step well.
We aim to:
To increase the number of water harvesting structures in Chandelao village as well as its surrounding areas
To improve and maintain the existing water catchment structures
To maintain and preserve the traditional step well of Chandelao
To create awareness on water conservation
The results:
One new channel has been made to supply more water to the village lake of Chandelao.
A 200 000 liter water tank has been built at Chandelao school
The way forward:
Repair and improve the area around the step well increasing the water quality
Make one more channel
Create more efficient collection of silt in the channels
