Education is the key to development. The public schools in India are free, 12 grades, from primary school to upper secondary school. In Chandelao, there are schools up to middle school level. In the Chandelao village most boys go to school.

Background:
Education is the key to development. The public schools in India are free, 12 grades, from primary school to upper secondary school. In Chandelao, there are schools up to middle school level. In the Chandelao village most boys go to school. Only 50 % of the girls are given the opportunity to education. Out of those very few reach higher than middle school, stopping at the age of 11. The reason to this being mainly cultural traditions. In Chandelao, a small rural Rajasthan village, a girl cannot travel alone on a public bus or at all by herself. Very few of the villagers in Chandelao have access to a moped, not to mention a car. Therefore the actual transportation is the key to providing opportunities for girls to reach higher education. By creating good role models and respect of the local traditions the villagers of Chandealo will be supportive in sending also the girls to school. Therefore Basecamp with guests and partners support the education of Chandelao girls contributing with a school bus & driver to transport the girls safely between Chandelao and nearest secondary school in Dantiwada.

Aims:
To play an active role in supporting girls education in Chandelao and its surrounding villages
To contribute to the improvements on water collection systems in Chandealo school and its surrounding villages

Results:
A 200 000 liter water tank has been constructed in Chandelao school
Separate toilets for boys and constructed in Chandealo school
A tree planting programme has been initiated
One vehicle purchased and a driver employed
Two girls now attending Secondary Education in Dandiwada

The way forward:
Continue the support of higher education of both Chandelao girls and girls from the surrounding villages by increasing to a larger vehicle
Support the surrounding village schools with the constructions of toilets
Support the surrounding village schools with the constructions of water collection systems
