"Death or the West Coast"

"There is no choice, but onwards. The rule is as follows: Death or the west coast [...]" This quote is from the famous polar explorer Fridtjov Nansen (1861-1930), when he as a leader of a group of six was the first to cross Greenland in 1888. This trip is the closest expedition we have to that major feat, though we provide considerable more comfort and safety.

When the ship left the four team members on the east coast of Greenlands, the only possibility of survival was to reach the west coast and civilization, before running out of food... However, when we leave Longyearbyen, fortunately we do not have to set our life at stake for a successful expedition. During the trip we will experience some of the most spectacular scenery Spitsbergen has to offer. The route goes from Longyearbyen through open valleys, over ice-covered fjords and on thousand years old glacier ice - always towards the west. We pass the old Russian mining town Pyramiden, the mountains Tre Kroner and the big glaciers on Oscar the Second's Land.

The first day is used for briefing, going through equipment and packing of sleds. Day two we set out from Longyearbyen towards Tempelfjorden and our ship frozen in the ice. Here we enjoy a three course dinner and spend the night onboard “Basecamp Ship in the Ice". The next day we put the last tracks of civilisation behind us and set course for the true wilderness. During the following days we will travel in virgin terrain and spend the nights camping in expedition tents we bring with us. The weather conditions decide where and how far we travel each day. We may experience a great deal of the arctic animal wildlife and if we are lucky we might just see the king of the Arctic - the polar bear.

It is needed to point out that this is a true expedition, where it is the cooperation of the group that is the key to success. As a member of the expedition you must be prepared on taking part actively. The weather conditions will decide the choice of route and it may not be possible to reach the west coast. What are certain is that it will be an unforgettable experience and that we will all return to civilisation in one piece!
