Basecamp Ship in the Ice - Tempelfjord
Here you can experience a silence and an light you will not find any other places, and perhaps you are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the up to 700 kilo bear that sometimes wanders by the boat.
Staying aboard the only hotel boat frozen in sea ice in the world is a unique experience for modern people. This is a great opportunity to experience the spectacular arctic nature up close. In the arctic you find silence and light you cannot find any other place. And maybe you are lucky to catch a glimpse of a polar bear wandering by the boat! To experience the arctic nature on Svalbard, with the special feeling, the light and the silence, you will have to leave “the city”, and the most exclusive and exciting place for unique experiences you will find aboard the ship, frozen in the ice covering Tempelfjord. An early walk on the deck before breakfast will give you memories for life and awaken your appetite.
The boat lays in beautiful Tempelfjord with a view towards the Von Post glacier. This is at the centre of the kingdom of Hilmar Nøis, where he did most of his trapping during his 37 winters on Svalbard. The trapper station Fredheim, where he built his Svalbard home, will be passed on the way to the boat, and we will be happy to take a detour to some of his other stations if opportunity allows.
The ‘Noorderlicht’ is a two-masted schooner celebrating her 100th birthday this year. In accordance with the strict safety rules from the Shipping Inspection, ‘Noorderlicht’ has the license to sail all around the world with passengers. She has been modernised and equipped for cruises around Svalbard, which it has done for the last 15 summers. The elegant hull and the well-balanced rigging make her into a fast sailor. The comfortable two- master schooner, equipped for both warm and cold areas, is the ideal ship for those who are into adventures. The deckhouse and saloon below deck are spacious. Here you find ten twin-cabins. Every cabin is equipped with 80x200cm bunk beds, hot/cold running water and a 220V power point. Five toilets and four showers are for shared use. The Chef prepares tasty meals in the galley. In the deckhouse you find an excellent selection of books about Spitsbergen and Norway. Here you will meet the pleasant Dutch crew and the hostess welcomes you in Norwegian, of which she is highly proficient.
