Safari Masai Mara- expand your horizons
He has a spear in his hand, a club in his belt, and a big smile on his face when we see him from the window of the small plane just landed on the dusty air-strip in Masai Mara. His name is Benjamin, and he’s to be our guide.
The savannah stretches to the horizon, giving us a stirring sense of endless space once aboard the classic, open safari Landcruiser. A herd of 20 elephants, with several calves, browse peacefully on either side of the road. Up ahead, five giraffes lope away in huge slow-motion strides.
Soon we arrive at Basecamp Masai Mara. Small vervet monkeys scamper playfully around us on the path. We had heard we would be sleeping in a tent, but we didn’t realize it was a sumptuous beige-coloured marquee, complete with a stylish bathroom and outdoor shower. Oh la la! The wastewater, the housekeeper informs us, is reused to nurture the treplantation.
Our riverside tent overlooks the Mara. We are told the building materials are all from replenishable sources, and that all constructions can be dismantled and the site returned to wilderness shortly after. Solar panels heat the water, power the lights, and – most importantly - cool the beer the bartender puts in my hand at the spacious veranda.

We recommend spending about six days in the Masai Mara.
