Basecamp Al Intiswar

The Dhow - at the heart of the Swahili culture

Romance, comfort and adventure  today , but also the traditional coastal sailing vessel of East Africa. Al Intiswar secures smooth exploring in the Lamu archipelago. Restored by Basecamps Dhow building school.

Our activities on Lamu are centred on sailing “safaris” , Swalihina, our first boat – or dhow – is 56 feet long and 18 feet wide. Al Intiswar our second dhow has also been rebuilt and restored at Basecamp´s Dhow Building School, where we employ local craftsmen and train youth in traditional boatbuilding skills. Now she sails gracefully in these tropical waters, past mangrove forest alive with birds, bay with dazzling white sandy beaches, majestic palm groves and undisturbed Bajun villages.
