Walking with the Maasai

Walking Safari in Maasai Mara and Naboisho

Walking on the Savannah is a truly exceptional experience, only permitted inside private conservancies such as Naboisho Conservancy. The length and intensity of our Walking Safaris can be adjusted to suit guests’ preferences and fitness levels.

Day 1

As you disembark your plane at Naboisho Airstrip one of our friendly and knowledgeable Maasai Guides – the true experts – is standing ready to welcome you to Naboisho Conservancy. Our staff will care for your luggage while you proceed on foot together with your Maasai Guide and a team of Maasai guards. As you descend into Naboisho Conservancy, prepare to be overwhelmed by this Garden of Eden, home to a wide variety of wild animals including thriving populations of lions, elephants, cheetah and leopards. You will arrive at Wilderness Camp – our tribute to safaris as they were meant to be – in time for lunch. After lunch, relax in your tent while you gaze across the incomparable Saddle Valley. At 4pm meet your Maasai Guide for an Afternoon Game Drive. Going on Safari in one of our specially designed safari vehicles allows you to explore different dimensions of the savannah than you can on foot. Return to Wilderness Camp in time for dinner. Enjoy the contrast of eating first-class cuisine right in the middle of the wilderness. After dinner, gather around the fireplace to listen to the meditative rhythm of the Maasai chanting. When you are ready, retire to your tent and fall asleep to the sounds of the savannah.

Day 2

Wake at dawn for a Morning Walking Safari across the Savannah. Breakfast is served at your next destination, Eagle View Camp. Located atop a natural hilltop, Eagle View is renowned for its unprecedented panoramic views of Naboisho. Spend your morning relaxing in your spacious tent or in one of the comfortable common areas. After lunch, accompany your Maasai Guide to Oleseri Village, Basecamp’s Green Village where we have built a health clinic, a primary school and a solar-powered borehole. Top off your Afternoon Game Drive with a Basecamp Sundowner under an Acacia Tree, followed by a Night Safari back to Eagle View. When driving in the dark your guide will equip the car with infrared lights to allow you to spot the nocturnal animals of Naboisho. Night Safaris are exhilarating experiences only permitted inside private conservancies like Naboisho. Return to camp for a three-course dinner followed by stargazing and story time around the fireplace.

Day 3

Rise in time to enjoy an early breakfast before embarking on your Full Day Walking Safari. During your walk you will explore some of the finer details of the savannah, such as learning how to spot animal footprints and identifying different kinds of dung. Walking with the Maasai is a fantastic experience that will bring you closer to nature, and indeed to yourself. As the day gets warmer, your guide will choose a suitable Acacia Tree where you can relax and refuel on a packed lunch. Your walk will continue when the temperature cools down. The destination of your walk is Dorobo Fly Camp; a mobile camp designed in admiration and respect for the hunter-gatherers of the Maasai people, known as the Dorobo. By removing all unnecessary distractions, we aim to bring guests closer to the very essence of the African Savannah. Gather together around the fireplace to enjoy a well-deserved dinner, stories about the wilderness, and Maasai chanting. Pinch yourself to make sure you are not dreaming…

Relax until lunch, allowing yourself time to reflect on everything you have experienced. After lunch gather your things and say your goodbyes. One final Game Drive takes you to Naboisho Air Strip in time for your scheduled 4pm flight, the perfect departure time for international connections or for continuing your African adventure by the coast. As your embark your plane, treasure the feeling of arriving as a guest, staying as a friend and leaving as a partner.
