Wonders of the Wildebeests

4 days Wildebeest Migration to Naboisho Conservancy

The Great Wildebeest Migration rightfully deserves its standing as one of the natural world’s most astonishing spectacles. Comprising more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes, the Great Migration constitutes the last surviving multi-species migration on the planet. From the end of June onwards, millions of freshly arrived brown and black dots scatter the great plains of the Mara, making this Natural Wonder of the World even more wondrous.

Day 1

As you disembark the plane at Ol Kiombo Airstrip our friendly and knowledgeable Maasai Guides – the true specialists – are ready to take you on your very first Game Drive. During your drive you will be introduced to the Guest of Honour of the Great Migration: Mr. Wildebeest himself. Perhaps not the cleverest or cutest creature on the planet, the wildebeest is nevertheless the star of the largest get-together of large mammals on the planet. After an exhilarating day across the savannah, arrive at your first destination, Eagle View Camp. A luxurious camp built with the highest ecological standards and allows for the impossible combination of perspective and proximity, with an incredible view of the Savannah. Enjoy an afternoon of relaxation in the exclusive Mara Naboisho Conservancy. Take in the amazing view of the savannah from our viewing deck overlooking a watering hole frequented by wildlife both day and night or relax on your tent terrace with nothing but the tranquility of the savannah to soothe you. Prepare for your evening on the Savannah and enjoy a delicious three-course dinner, followed by stargazing and storysharing around the fireplace.

Day 2

Start your day with a Morning Game Drive, followed by a picnic breakfast on the savannah. Explore Naboisho together with your Maasai Guide, who will tell you more about the importance of private conservancies for the protection of the Greater Mara Ecosystem and the Maasai people. After your Game Drive visit the students at Koiyaki Guiding School, a capacity-building institution supported by Basecamp Explorer. After lunch join your Maasai Guide on a visit some of the community projects supported by Basecamp including a drilling a solar-powered borehole. Round off your Afternoon Game Drive with a Basecamp Sundowner on the savannah. Drive back to Eagle View in the dark. Your guide will equip the car with infrared lights to allow you to spot the nocturnal animals of Naboisho. A Night Safari is an exhilarating experience, only to be enjoyed inside private conservancies like Naboisho.

Day 3

Awake at dawn for your Morning Walking Safari. Experience the Savannah from a different dimension as you explore the trails in the wilderness, wandering from scenic spot to scenic spot beside the Maasai exactly as their people have been doing for generations. Similarly to the wildebeest, the Maasai are nomads who walk the savannah in search of food and water for their livestock. It is only in recent times that the Maasai people have started looking for alternative ways of living, forced to do so by modern development.
The wildebeest are faced with similar challenge as their traditional migratory routes become increasingly threatened by urbanization. Your walk will take you to the next destination on your journey – Wilderness Camp. Tucked away deep inside the incomparable Saddle Valley, Wilderness Camp is our tribute to safari as it was meant to be. Arrive at Wilderness Camp in time for a late breakfast, thereafter relax at the camp and take in the nature around you. After an Afternoon Game Drive return to Wilderness Camp in time for Sundowner. Enjoy the contrast of eating first-class cuisine in the middle of the wilderness. After dinner, gather around the fireplace to listen to the meditative Maasai chanting. Reflect on all the amazing things you have seen and learned, despite the briefness of your stay.

Day 4

Wake at dawn for a final Morning Walking Safari or Morning Game Drive. Witness how the savannah springs to life as the sun rises. During the walk your Maasai Guide will teach you some of the finer details of the savannah, including how to identify animal footprints and different kinds of dung. Enjoy a picnic breakfast on the Savannah before returning to camp. After lunch gather your things and say your goodbyes. Following one last Game Drive reach Naboisho Air Strip in time for your scheduled 4.00pm flight, the perfect departure time for international connections or for continuing your African adventure by the coast. As your board your plane, treasure the wonders of the wildebeest, the feeling of coming as a guest, staying as a friend and leaving as a partner – even after a short stay with us!
