Experience the Great Migration

Seven days Migration Safari to Maasai Mara and Naboisho

Visiting Maasai Mara during Migration Season is the ultimate way of experiencing the last multi-species migration on the planet. From mid-June to December more than a million wildebeest, zebras and antelopes scatter the vast plains of the Mara, making this natural wonder even more wondrous.

Day 1

As you disembark at Olkiombo Airstrip your friendly and knowledgeable Maasai Guide – a true specialist – is standing ready to take you on your very first Game Drive! You will set off in one of our open and tailor-made 4×4 Safari Land Cruisers. During your drive you will be introduced to the Guest of Honour of the Great Migration: Mr Wildebeest himself. Perhaps not the cleverest or cutest creature on the planet, the wildebeest is nevertheless the star of the largest get-together of large mammals on the planet. Also known as a gnu, these odd-looking beasts have an essential part to play in the Mara-Serengeti Ecosystem. Even their dung has significant value; 60,000 tons worth of fertilizer. At around 4pm, you stroll across our private suspension bridge to meet your Maasai Guide for your Afternoon Game Drive. As the temperature cools in the late afternoon, the predators of the Mara start preparing for the evening hunt. For the Big Cats – the lions, the cheetah and the leopards – the Migration Season is a time of abundance. The vast amount of available prey allows the cats to grow strong, and produce healthy offspring. During your Afternoon Game Drive you will witness how the constant battle for survival makes the Migration Season a particularly exhilarating time to visit Basecamp Explorer Kenya. As the sun sets you will return to camp for dinner, followed by stargazing and story-time around the fireplace. When you’re ready, one of our Maasai night guards – known as Askaris – will escort you back to your tent, where you will be lulled to sleep by the sounds of chewing wildebeest and singing grasshoppers.

Day 2

Wake up to the magnificent symphony of Basecamp Masai Mara’s incredible birdlife. Following a hearty breakfast, our Naturalist Maasai Guide will take you on a Camp Walk to show you some of the operational elements that have made Basecamp one of the leading pioneers in the Responsible Tourism Industry. See how we reuse, recycle and regenerate – every step of the way. After lunch, you will meet your Maasai Guide for your Afternoon Game Drive. During your drive you will learn more about the importance of the wildebeest for the survival of the Maasai Mara Ecosystem. Top off your Afternoon Game Drive with a classic Basecamp Sundowner of carefully selected drinks, enjoyed under an Acacia Tree. Return to Basecamp Masai Mara for dinner, followed by story sharing and stargazing around the fireplace. Listen to your Maasai Guide tell stories about their culture while you listen to the grazing wildebeest herds just across the river.

Day 3

Rise with the sun in time for your Morning Game Drive. Greet those wildebeest fortunate enough to survive the night; congratulate the lions happily feasting on freshly killed prey. After breakfast at Basecamp Masai Mara, you will collect your things and prepare to continue your journey through the Basecamp Circuit. Your next destination is Eagle View Camp, which in 2013 made the National Geographic Travellers Magazine’s list of the twenty-five top eco-lodges in the world– the only one in Kenya. At 4 pm meet your Maasai Guide for your Afternoon Game Drive. Eagle View is situated inside Naboisho Wildlife Conservancy, a 20,000 hectare (50,000 acres) large nature conservancy leased directly from more than 500 Maasai families. Inside Naboisho the number of vehicles permitted is strictly limited. This has the double advantage of attracting a wide array of species as well as creating a more exclusive viewing experience for tourists. Inside Naboisho you will encounter the Northern Migration of wildebeest, the not-so-distant relative of the wildebeest migrating from the Serengeti that you meet in the National Reserve. The wildebeest of the Northern Migration walk down from the Lloita Plains in the North in search of fresh grass and water, exactly like their southern relatives. As you drive, enjoy the varied landscape of Naboisho, presently offering the highest density of lions on the planet.

Day 4

Start your day with a Morning Game Drive, followed by a picnic breakfast on the savannah. Explore Naboisho together with your Maasai Guide, who will tell you more about the importance of private conservancies for the protection of the Greater Mara Ecosystem and the Maasai people. After your Game Drive visit the students at Koiyaki Guiding School, a capacity-building institution supported by Basecamp Explorer. After lunch join your Maasai Guide on a visit some of the community projects supported by Basecamp including a drilling a solar-powered borehole. Round off your Afternoon Game Drive with a Basecamp Sundowner on the savannah. Drive back to Eagle View in the dark. Your guide will equip the car with infrared lights to allow you to spot the nocturnal animals of Naboisho. A Night Safari is an exhilarating experience, only to be enjoyed inside private conservancies like Naboisho.

Day 5

Wake at dawn to join your Maasai Guide on a Morning Walking Safari across the savannah. Walking alongside the Maasai is an unforgettable experience, which perfectly echoes the wanderings of the wildebeest. On your walk your guide will show you the finer details of the savannah, including wildlife footprints and dung. Your walk finishes at Wilderness Bush Camp, the next stop on your journey through the Basecamp Circuit. We like to think that moving through the Basecamp Circuit mimics the migratory routes of the wildebeest. It is both a physical and a mental journey that will broaden your horizon and deepen your understanding of the wild – and of yourself. Wilderness Bush Camp is our tribute to safari as it was meant to be. Tucked away deep inside the incomparable Saddle Valley, it is just you, the Maasai, the wildlife, and the stars – absolutely no unnecessary distractions. After a midday relaxation join your Maasai Guide for an Afternoon Walk or Game Drive, returning to camp in time for a three-course dinner served to you in the middle of the wilderness. After dinner, gather around the fireplace to listen to the meditative Maasai chanting while enjoying the rare privilege of zero light pollution.

Day 6

After an early breakfast prepare for your Full Day Walking Safari. Walk beside the Maasai exactly as their people have been doing for generations. Much like the wildebeest, the Maasai are nomads who walk the savannah in search of food and water for their livestock. As the day gets warmer your guide will choose a suitable Acacia Tree, under which you can relax and refuel on a packed lunch. When the temperature cools down you will continue your walk. Like the wildebeest, the Maasai walk in rhythm with nature. Return to camp for sunset and dinner. Reflect on the experiences of the day around the fireplace before retiring to your tent. Listen to the sounds of the savannah as you fall asleep

Day 7

Wake at dawn in time for a final Morning Walking Safari or Morning Game Drive. Witness how the savannah comes alive as the sun rises. Return for breakfast. After breakfast collect your things and say your goodbyes. Just like the wildebeest, the time has come to wander on. Reach the Naboisho Air Strip in time for your scheduled 4pm flight, the perfect departure time for international connections or for continuing your African adventure by the coast. As you leave, treasure the feeling of coming as a guest, staying as a friend and leaving as a partner. As one of our guests said at departure: “words fail me”.
