Taste of the Maasai Mara

Experience the great Maasai Mara area with Basecamp

Your Safari Adventure is closer than you think. For travellers with limited time we have designed a shorter express programme comprising the very best of the Maasai Mara. The Maasai Mara is easily reached both by plane and car. Our closest airstrip, Olkiombo, offers daily AM and PM connections to Nairobi.

Day 1

As you disembark your plane at Olkiombo Airstrip one of our friendly Maasai Guides – the true specialists – will be standing ready to take you on your very first Game Drive, in one of our tailor-made 4×4 Safari Land Cruisers. During your drive you will be introduced to the exceptional wildlife of the Maasai Mara, including thriving populations of lions, elephants, cheetah and leopards. You will arrive at Basecamp Maasai Mara – our very own cradle of mankind – in time for lunch, freshly prepared by our trained team of Maasai chefs. After lunch, wander around the camp and take in the tranquility of Basecamp Masai Mara. Though your stay with us is limited, the serenity of the surroundings is sure to help you reconnect and rebalance. At 4pm, you will meet your Maasai Guide for your Afternoon Game Drive. As you explore the many dimensions of the Maasai Mara Ecosystem, your Maasai Guide will share stories about the wildlife and the Maasai culture. Return to Basecamp Masai Mara in time for a delicious three-course dinner, followed by story sharing and stargazing around the fireplace. When you are ready, retire to your tent to be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the wilderness.

Day 2

Awake to the magnificent ‘wake up call’ symphony of Basecamp Masai Mara’s astonishing birdlife. After breakfast meet your Naturalist Maasai Guide for a Camp Walk around the camp compound. During your walk you will be introduced to some of the operational elements that have made Basecamp a leading pioneer in responsible tourism. Your Camp Walk includes a visit to the Basecamp Maasai Brand workshop, our capacity-building program that employs 118 women. Complete your Camp Walk by planting a tree in our Tree Plantation, next to those planted by the Obama Family. After a delicious lunch, stroll across our private suspension bridge to join your Maasai Guide for your Afternoon Game Drive. Be amazed by the variety of the Mara and see how there is never a dull moment on safari. Conclude your Game Drive with a traditional Basecamp Sundowner of drinks and nibbles enjoyed under an Acacia Tree. Return to Basecamp Masai Mara for dinner, followed by story sharing and stargazing around the fireplace. Reflect on all the amazing things you have seen and learned, despite the briefness of your stay.
