Journey through the green season in Masai Mara Kenya with Basecamp Explorer. During this season, the rains bring back all the trees and flowers to life, creating a lush serene setting. The savanna is backed by plenty of wildlife, from the babies taking their first steps to the dramatic life-and-death scenes of predator and prey. Our Green Safari program is tailor-made to maximize guests’ opportunities to enjoy unique and unforgettable safari experiences for photographers, wildlife and bird enthusiasts, as well as those who are looking for new adventure in the Mara.

Day 1

Upon your arrival at Olkiombo Airstrip, you will meet by our Masai guide for a transfer to our camp in Masai Mara, Basecamp Masai Mara. You will set off in one of our open and custom-made 4×4 Safari Vehicles for a game drive en-route. This is the point where you will be introduced to the green plains of Masai Mara. Masai Mara is well known for its rich wildlife and the spectacular wildebeest migration. Marvel at the African bush as it comes alive with bountiful grazing and browsing animals scattered all over with their newborn babies. It is also a good time to watch out for predators like cheetahs and lions as they for their kill. You will arrive at the camp in time for Lunch. After a short camp briefing, you will have lunch then have time to relax in your tent to allow you to unwind and adjust to the pace of safari in Africa before your next adventure. At 4:00pm you will join your guide for an afternoon game drive. Enjoy excellent general game viewing on the broad Mara plains whose spectacular scenery is adorned with herds of plains game and the ever-attendant predators. This adventure becomes a more exciting experience since you never know what you’ll get to see. Return to camp for dinner followed by relaxation at the campfire as you let the lull of the savannah soothe you.

Basecamp Masai Mara

Day 2

Wake up to the magnificent symphony of Baseecamp Masai Mara’s incredible birdlife. You will then join your guide for a morning game drive. Don’t forget your camera since it is a beautiful time of the year for photography: the air is clear and bright, and the bush alive with vibrant color and new life creating great photo opportunities. Enjoy watching some of the great wildlife spectacles like zebra migrations, antelopes giving birth, and predators enjoying the bounty of the season. Head back to camp for breakfast and thereafter have time to relax and just enjoy the beautiful atmosphere and scenery of the Mara. After lunch you will visit Basecamp Masai Brand a community project with Maasai women in the Talek region of Masai Mara that provides livelihood to many families. Later in the afternoon cross over to the reserve using the camp’s footbridge to meet your Masai guide waiting for you. Enjoy an afternoon game drive over the rolling grassland dotted with a mixture of acacia trees and the plain game which includes large herds of elephants, zebras, topis, hartebeests, gazelles, impala’s not forgetting the well-known Wildebeests. Top off your Afternoon Game Drive with a classic Basecamp Sundowner with carefully selected drinks, enjoyed under an Acacia tree. Return to Basecamp Masai Mara for dinner. Later listen to your Maasai Guide tell stories about their culture as you sit around the campfire.

Day 3

Start the day with a morning bird walk around camp especially along the Talek river path. The trees and forest surrounding the camp are home to over 300 species of birds including Long-tailed widowbird, Secretary Birds, Crested Cranes, Little Bee-eater, African Wattled Plover, Vultures among others. Your birding adventure will be followed by a leisurely breakfast. After breakfast, our Naturalist Maasai Guide will take you around the Camp to show you how we reuse, recycle and regenerate waste every step of the way making us pioneers of responsible travel. You will also have time to learn about our tree plantation project. End your camp tour with a tree planting session. Head back to camp for lunch. After lunch, you will head out to Talek Centre for a cultural tour. You’ll have the chance to meet local Masai people, witness how they interact on day to day basis. Your guide will also have interesting information about the Masai community that would be great to listen to. This is also a chance for you to visit some of the community projects that Basecamp has been supporting over the years contributing towards improving the livelihoods of the community. Return to camp to gather your things and prepare to continue your journey through the Basecamp Circuit. Your next destination is Wilderness Camp in Mara Naboisho Conservancy. Your transfer will include a game drive en-route. Mara Naboisho is a 50,000 acres large nature conservancy leased directly from more than 500 Maasai families. You are bound to see healthy game animals moving through the plains. The lush green landscapes and floral displays in the conservancy that attracts a large number of plains game. You will arrive at Wilderness Camp in time for dinner. This is an eco-friendly camp located deep in the Saddle Valley and overnight stay.

Wilderness Camp

Day 4

Your day will begin with an early morning game drive, giving you great opportunities to see the wildlife during the gorgeous morning light. This will be followed by a picnic breakfast on the savannah. Since the landscape is a vibrant green canvas there are a lot of floral colors, spectacular bird and wildlife encounters. As you explore the endless plains of the conservancy, your guide will share with you the life histories of the lion pride in this area, which have been extensively studied as well as the importance of private conservancies for the protection of the Greater Mara Ecosystem and the Maasai people. Since you will be in a private concession it is possible to drive off-road in search of that perfect photo opportunity. Later head back to camp to enjoy some relaxing time for the rest of morning. In the late afternoon return to the wilderness in search of some exciting game experiences. The drive starts in the late afternoon as the sun’s rays are dipping to the west. After a leisurely pause for the classic Basecamp sundowner, and as the African day is transformed into a soft colorful evening canvas, the night drive begins. The mystery unfolds as the creatures of the night, especially the predators, are revealed by a spotlight, often unexpectedly. Glimpse to the amber gaze of hunting lions. Return to camp then have dinner and cocktails around the campfire listening to the sounds of the bush.

Wilderness Camp

Day 5

Wake at dawn to join your Maasai Guide on a Morning Walking Safari across the savannah. During your walk, your guide will show you the finer details of the savannah, including wildlife footprints and dung and how to use these to track animals. Your walk ends up at Eagle View Camp, the next stop on your journey through the Basecamp Circuit. The camp is perched on the edge of a cliff providing stunning views over the Mara Naboisho plains. Gaze out from your private veranda onto the Mara Naboisho plains or settle back with a gin-and-tonic in the central lounge and dining area boasting spectacular views of the waterhole which attracts bird and animals from miles around. Later after lunch, you will head out to visit our community outreach program at Koiyaki Guiding School, a capacity-building institution supported by Basecamp Explorer. The school offers training course for students aspiring to be professional guides. At around 4:00pm you will join your Maasai Guide for an Afternoon Game Drive, enjoy watching a wealth of wildlife, migratory birds, crystal clear night skies, and occasional dramatic tropical downpours. Return to camp in time for a three-course dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6

On your final day, you will embark on a Morning Walking Safari or Morning Game Drive. Witness how the savannah comes alive as the sun rises. Return to camp for a delicious breakfast then head to your tent to gather your things before lunch is served. After lunch, say your goodbyes. Keep your camera ready as you take the transfer to the airstrip you never know when the elephants may turn up! Reach the Naboisho Air Strip in time for your scheduled 4pm flight, the perfect departure time for international connections or to continue on your African adventure.
