Classic Migration Safari

5 days Classic Migration Safari at Basecamp Masai Mara

The Great Wildebeest Migration rightfully deserves its standing as one of the natural world’s most astonishing spectacles. Comprising more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes, the Great Migration constitutes the last surviving multi-species migration on the planet. From the end of June onwards, millions of freshly arrived brown and black dots scatter the great plains of the Mara, making this Natural Wonder of the World even more wondrous.

Day 1

As you arrive to Maasai Mara our Maasai Guides – the true specialists – are ready to take you on your very first Game Drive! This is the best time to see the wildebeest migration. You will set off in one of our open and tailor-made 4×4 Safari Land Cruisers. During your drive, you will be introduced to great migration and you will meet the great wildebeest himself. Once at Basecamp Masai Mara you can settle to your tent and enjoy a lunch while looking into the Maasai Mara Reserve. At around 4pm, you stroll across our private suspension bridge to meet your Maasai Guide for your Afternoon Game Drive. As the temperature cools in the late afternoon, the predators of the Mara start preparing for the evening hunt. For the Big Cats – the lions, the cheetah and the leopards – the Migration Season is a time of abundance. During your Afternoon Game Drive you will witness how the constant battle for survival makes the Migration Season a particularly exhilarating time to visit Basecamp Explorer Kenya. As the sun sets you will return to camp for dinner, followed by stargazing and story-time around the fireplace. When you’re ready, one of our Maasai night guards – known as Askaris – will escort you back to your tent.

Day 2-3

Awake to the magnificent ‘wake up call’ symphony of Basecamp Masai Mara’s astonishing birdlife. Enjoy a sumptuous breakfast before embarking on a full day safari in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Abundant wildlife on the savannah gives fantastic photo opportunities. The incredible backdrop of clear blues and the rolling Savannah will captivate you providing you with memories to last a lifetime. Catch the action at the crossing point and stalk the herds just like the lions and the cheetahs, capturing them with your lens and in your heart. Enjoy an exceptional wilderness migration holiday; there is never a dull moment on the savannah. Return to camp at sundown for dinner followed by relaxation at the campfire as you tell of your experiences on the African wilderness.

Following a hearty breakfast, our Naturalist Maasai Guide will take you on a Camp Walk to show you some of the operational elements that have made Basecamp one of the leading pioneers in the Responsible Tourism Industry. See how we reuse, recycle and regenerate – every step of the way. After lunch, you will meet your Maasai Guide for your Afternoon Game Drive. During your drive you will learn more about the importance of the wildebeest for the survival of the Maasai Mara Ecosystem. Top off your Afternoon Game Drive with a classic Basecamp Sundowner of carefully selected drinks, enjoyed under an Acacia Tree. Return to Basecamp Masai Mara for dinner, followed by story sharing and stargazing around the fireplace. Listen to your Maasai Guide tell stories about their culture while you listen to the grazing wildebeest herds just across the river.
