Where the African sky meets the savannah

I can’t believe it! The animals are right there, almost close enough to touch. You were told that the terraces at Leopard Hill were close to nature, but you had to witness it first-hand to fully capture the moment. Careful not to scare off the four-legged visitors, you are lost in the moment, forgetting the surrounding comforts of the modern world and becoming one with the wild of Mara Naboisho Conservancy.

Leopard Hill offers a unique location in the heart of Mara Naboisho Conservancy to experience the magic of the Kenyan savannah. The camp is situated next to a series of watering holes where the wildlife of the savannah would flock to drink, offering you a chance to observe the African wildlife from a prime spot. And to top it all, you are able to enjoy the scenery without disturbance, as this part of Naboisho Conservancy is restricted from motorized vehicles.

Another unique feature of the Leopard Hill camp can be found in the tents. Dubbed the Star Bed, the tent roof can be opened to present a stunning view of the African night sky for you to marvel before falling asleep.

Leopard Hill tented camp is our newest location, built in a similar fashion as our other Kenyan Basecamps, on elevated wooden decks. But Leopard Hill is also unique. It offers the closest proximity to a watering hole in the Maasai Mara and thus an unhindered view to the activities of the local wildlife, while enjoying the modern luxury of the camp.

What makes Leopard Hill accommodation truly special, is the adjustable motorized roof of the tents, which provides an unhindered view of the African night sky. And yes, you are still separated from the nocturnal wildlife by a nearly invisible mosquito net.

The Leopard Hill camp is watched over by a giant fig tree. This twin tree, dubbed Double Fig Tree, was struck by lightning in the 1950’s, as told by the local people. The tree was splintered in two, giving it it’s unusual shape. Build almost under this Fig Tree, the camp has the perfect sunrises. While enjoying your morning coffee on the terrace, you can witness as the sun rises over the eastern horizon, sky blazing in magnificent colors, completed by the majestic silhouette of the Double Fig Tree.

Double tented rooms

The tent architecture is inspired by round Maasai houses called Manyattas. This offers an almost 360 degree view of the surroundings, from your bed towards the Fig Tree and the water wholes and from the bathroom to the back. The design of the lodging is done by the Norwegian architect Ajas Mellbye. Each tent has it’s own theme, while the ambience is set by furniture and decor of African and Indian origin. Each tent houses an outdoor fireplace on a large terrace and has both indoor and outdoor showers. The price is based per person sharing a tent.

Price includes full board accommodation, mineral water, airstrip transfers, shared game drive safaris. Extra fees are Maasai Mara park fees, domestic or international flights, Single supplement is 80 USD per person per night. Children 3-12 years sharing tent with adults pay 50% of the full rate.

Leopard Hill has a spacious lounge tent adjacent to the dining area. The lounge houses a bar and library with interesting safari books. The lounge tent is built on leveled terraces, offering cozy spots by the fire to enjoy the vastness of African wilderness. All meals are included in the camp price.

You can have a cup of coffee and a snack served on your tent terrace before the game drive and decide to have the breakfast out in the bush during your morning drive or just have a full breakfast in the main dining tent. A 3-course lunch is served in the dining tent or as a picnic lunch during a full day game drive or hiking safari.

At Leopard Hill, we serve a traditional English afternoon tea every day. A favourite location for this is under the big fig tree, or at your own tent. Dinner is a memorable time of the day, and the option of where to dine is up to you. You can join your safari companions for a meal and an evening of stories and laughter at the dining tent, or dine outdoors in the privacy of your own tent, alone with your loved one. The choice is yours.

Please inquire about our supreme bush meals (bush breakfast, lunch and dinner) which can be organized on request at a supplementary cost.

At Leopard Hill, we offer our guests an opportunity to discover the unspoiled natural beauty of the Mara while engaging in a variety of safari activities. Every evening you can plan the following day’s activities with your guide and decide on what you want to do. You can choose to go out on a game drive, either in the morning to Naboisho Conservancy, or enjoy a full day in the Masai Mara National Reserve or an evening game drive with a sundowner and a chance to spot the nocturnal animals after dark.

If you wish to have a bit more movement, we recommend a walking safari, morning hours are the best since this is when the air is still a bit cool, but a long hike is also possible with a picnic lunch along the way. One of the new activities in the area is horse riding, a new way to experience the bush from a different angle. Each tent has two yoga mats that you can roll out on the terrace any time you feel like it. For a bit of relaxation, we have an optional massage session in the privacy of your own tent.

Please inquire about our popular additional activities not included in the price such as hot air balloon safari with champagne breakfast, horseback ride safaris, and massage.

Enjoy two very different destinations with this African safari. Spend a few days in a highly modern tented camp of Leopard Hill and experience classic game viewing from leopard sightings to elephant encounters in a true wilderness setting. Wind up your safari with a trip to Africa’s leading beach destination Diani Beach to soak up some sunshine along the tropical beach. Our itinerary is an ideal recipe for a laidback luxury safari holiday inclusive of game drives and walking safaris in the non-motorized area of Mara Naboisho Conservancy and sunset dhow cruises with a selection of watersports in Diani Beach.
