Football - The Basecamp Mara Cup
![]() ![]() ![]() |
The annual Basecamp Mara Football Cup has over the past few years gained the enthusiastic support of a large part of the tourism sector community of the Masai Mara. If lucky, you can catch a match of this dazzling event on the savannah, just outside the village of Talek, with Thompson gazelles and gnus on the horizon.
The event was initially started as a welfare program to bring staff at Basecamp Masai Mara closer together, as well as to build a bridge of trust and engagement between different camps and lodges in the area. The Mara Cup promotes fair play, honesty and transparency - qualities that all harmonize with the ideals of eco-tourism and responsible business developed at Basecamp Masai Mara.
The Basecamp team players are encouraged to convey the message of environmental conservation and eco-tourism to Talek youth by offering training opportunities to pupils of the Talek Primary School - both boys and girls.
Football matches and training also provides Basecamp with opportunities to raise important community issues with the youth - ranging from HIV/AIDS awareness to job opportunities to environmental protection.
In March 2007 the Basecamp Maasai Mara Team gallantly defended the 2006/07 Cup by winning the finals for the second time!
