Food for the Future!

Basecamp has as a principle that its destinations provide good food to its guests and staff. This means the food, whenever possible, should be organic (i.e. 'ecological'), fair trade, and locally produced. Sourcing food locally on Spitsbergen in winter is of course a challenge, but at our destinations in Kenya and the Pyrenees our Basecamps have organic gardens from which we provide fresh herbs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and even chicken!

Clean water

Four rural villages outside Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India now have access to clean water and improved sanitation, through projects funded by the Basecamp Foundation and engaged Basecamp guests and supporters, and managed in cooperation with the local Raj - who happens to own the fortress that also serves as the Basecamp Rajasthan 'hotel'. Water channels, better sewer systems, water storage tanks and private toilets are now in place. With a particular focus on children in these rural communities, we have provided several local schools with clean drinking water.

Investing in People and Planet

Promoting good health among our staff, their families, and in the local communities at our destinations, is one of the best investments we can make. That's why we at the Basecamp Foundation, together with motivated guests, Basecamp staff, individual sponsors, and key partners, are putting such an effort into improving health facilities and services. Basecamp's destinations in developing countries, where HIV/AIDS is still a huge challenge, are a priority, with contributions and assistance coming from their "sister" destinations in the Pyrenees and on Spitsbergen.

Healthy communities are crucial to local economic development, necessary to achieve proper nature conservation, and a foundation for good education systems and cultural expression.

Our destinations are often found in remote areas, where medical infrastructure and local community services are either poor or lacking. We find therefore that our investments go a long way - both literally and in terms of showing up in the form of many smiling, healthy faces!

Fighting HIV & AIDS

With FEMINA-HIP, a Tanzania-based NGO, the Basecamp Foundation brings effective HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment to local communities and to the tourism sector in cooperation with the local health station. We distribute information material in Swahili. Trained local staff – our peer educators –spearhead our battle against this devastating disease. A light motorcycle in the Masai Mara, and a sailing 'dhow' out of Lamu are part of this awareness project to reach remote villages.
